Dear lecturers and participants to this 40th Annual Conference of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport,

I am very pleased and honored to welcome you all to Portugal and to this beautiful city of Porto, World Heritage by UNESCO.

The Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto will held, between the 12th and 15th of September, this sport philosopher’s annual meeting. This is one of our best university schools of sport and a renowned one in Europe.

This is the first time we organize this scientific meeting on this specific topic of Sport Philosophy that is growing in our schools in parallel with the aesthetic studies.

The Portuguese Government is pleased to see this particular scientific investment in this area of knowledge, in particular for the accurate discussion around the Conference subject: Thinking Sport in a Global Era.

We are sure that all participants and organizing committee will provide a fantastic venue and will be an excellent Conference full of debate and discussion.

Welcome to Portugal, welcome to the faculty of Sport of the University of Porto and have a fruitful time exchanging knowledge and experiences, taking also the time to enjoy all that Portugal has to offer.

Carwyn R. Jones, IAPS President

Estou muito contente em recebê-los na Conferência Anual da IAPS.

I am very honoured and privileged as the newly elected President to welcome you to the website for the 40th Annual Conference of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport.  The Conference will be held at the Faculty of Sport at the University of Porto between the 12th and 15th of September hot on the heels of London’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.  In our 40th year we are delighted that the Conference will be hosted in Portugal for the very first time.  The Association is very grateful to Professor Teresa Lacerda, Professor João Lima and their colleagues at the Faculty of Sport at the University of Porto for hosting the Conference in the fabulous city of Porto.  It is a fantastic venue and will be an excellent Conference.  The theme of the Conference is Thinking Sport in a Global Era is the motto for the Conference.

Unfortunately I was unable to make the previous Conference due to ill health; therefore, I am particularly keen to renew acquaintances, to see familiar faces, but also to meet new and unfamiliar faces. I’m sure that the Conference will provide a fantastic opportunity for philosophic debate and discussion, meeting new people and enjoying the best of Portuguese hospitality.  A particularly exciting development is that some sessions will be held in Portuguese and Spanish with abstracts to be published in the Portuguese Journal of Sport Sciences.  I hope that those who intend to visit our Annual Conference (perhaps for the first time) will consider becoming a member of the Association.  Our membership rates are very reasonable and include a number of the benefits.  These include copies of the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport, and if you are a student, eligibility for both the Student Travel Award and the Student Essay Award.  Details of membership and awards can be found on the IAPS website http://iaps.net/.

I certainly can’t wait to be at the Conference and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Muito obrigado, até setembro.

The Faculty of Sport of University of Porto (FADEUP) gives you a warm welcome to the IAPS Congress that will take place at Oporto from the 12th till the 15th September 2012.
The Faculty is deeply involved in the organization of the Congress, because it recognizes the actuality and relevance of the problematic that will be approached. Because of this, we are willing to correspond to your trust and expectations by trying to create an opportunity of scientific gathering and of cooperation proposals in the philosophy field of studies.
All of this invites us to carry out a high level congress and also, to give to you our best in order to last in your memory as a cultural and social reference.
The city of Oporto is World Heritage by UNESCO. We want you to feel that spirit in your communications and debates, when tasting food and wines, in your dialogues and celebrations of friendship that will make remarkable the Congress.

Teresa Lacerda and João Lima, Local Conference Chairs

João Lima

It is a pleasure to announce that the 40th Annual IAPS Conference will take place from Wednesday, September 12 through Sunday, September 15, 2012 at the University of Porto – Faculty of Sport, in Porto, Portugal.

The 2012 Conference is expected to have a good attendance and to be a landmark in the promotion of IAPS and in the dissemination of philosophy of sport in Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries. Geographical location, strong academic links and historical friendships make us enthusiastically expect a strong turn out from Spain and Brazil. We anticipate that some sessions will be held in Portuguese and Spanish. The philosophical issues arising from the outcome of the Olympic Games are an additional reason to expect for a very exciting conference.

Thinking Sport in a Global Era is the motto for the Conference. We expect it to be stimulating for IAPS members all around the world and also for all of those who are interested in the philosophy of sport.

Abstracts will be published in the Portuguese Journal of Sport Sciences and we intend to publish a peer-reviewed book of the works presented at the Conference.

The city of Porto dates back to Roman times and its name Portuscale is the origin of the name Portugal. Porto is also the name of one of the most famous wines in the world and a visit to Porto wine cellars is “required” to all visitors. Monuments from medieval age to the most audacious contemporary buildings can be appreciated in the city. A cruise in Douro river or a visit to Guimarães, European Capital of Culture in 2012, are suggestions to consider in conjunction with the conference to make your trip to Porto unforgettable and to leave in you heart the very Portuguese saudade (missing) sung by the singers of fado.

We will update you periodically about the conference. Please feel free to contact either of us whenever you have questions regarding the conference.

Hoping to see you in Porto, in mid September for a remarkable conference and stay,
